Students With Undocumented Family Members Protest Trump Election
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Students from several downtown Los Angeles high schools marched to city hall Wednesday morning to protest the election of Donald Trump.
The majority of these students have family members, even parents who are undocumented. They worry what the Trump administration will mean for their families. Daisy Garrido's mother and stepdad are both undocumented.
"And if they go back to their place, I don't know what I will do. And I have two little siblings to take care of," she said
"I've actually never seen or heard anything like this since the passage of prop 187," LAUSD board president Steve Zimmer said.
The district says it has sent extra counselors to its most vulnerable schools.
Alejandra Osorio has a child in elementary school and is worried about the fear a Trump presidency has put in her daughter.
"She's sad. Because she thinks I am going to go to Mexico and she stays alone."
The high school students who organized the march say they're not here to criticize their next president.
"This protest was to motivate us to do better," Erik Martinez said. "This protest was for us to feel hope again."
Meanwhile, on Wednesday CBS2's Craig Herrera spoke to members of the immigrant community in downtown Los Angeles who said they had a lot of anxiety in the wake of a Trump presidency.
