Lifeguards Issue Warning As More People Are Injured Stepping On Stingrays

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com)   — Headed to the beach this weekend?

Lifeguards have a warning for you. Watch your step.

CBS2's Michele Gile reported from Huntington Beach Friday where a series of signs warned people to be on the lookout for stingrays.

About 55 people have been hurt, some badly, by rays this past week.

It's scary and extremely painful, lifeguard warn.  There were 11 people injured on Thursday.

"I really don't know why we have had so many," says Hungtington Beach Marine Safety Officer Lt. Claude Panis, "it could be related to the fact we haven't had any great white shark sightings, and they're not around eating them."

Gile said lifeguards told her shuffling your feet back and forth is the best way to protect yourself.

As painful as the wound is, Gile reports treating it is no fun either.
