Memorial Service Held For Compton Sheriff's Sergeant

SAN DIMAS (CBSLA.com) — A memorial service was held Wednesday for Sgt. Al Lopez, who died of a heart attack while on duty in Compton.

The service began at 11 a.m. at Christ's Church of the Valley, located at 1404 West Covina Boulevard.

The funeral was closed to the general public, but was streamed online.

Lopez, 47, died at a hospital shortly after his patrol car crashed on Oct. 24 at Myrrh Street and Willowbrook Avenue.

A preliminary investigation revealed he went to assist other deputies who were involved in a pursuit of a stolen car when the crash took place.

An autopsy determined the 26-year veteran suffered a heart attack, and his death was listed as the result of natural causes, according to the coroner's office.

Lopez is survived by his wife and two adult children.
