Man Accused Of Fatally Stabbing Coworker's 3-Year-Old Daughter At Work In Downtown L.A.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man was arrested on suspicion of killing his coworker's three-year-old daughter at work in downtown Los Angeles.

The child, known as Rudy, was stabbed to death around 5:15 p.m. Monday at a garment factory in the 800 block of McGarry Street.

The girl had just been picked up from daycare to be with her mother when Ricardo Utuy, 34, stabbed her unprovoked, according to investigators.

Oscar Cerezo owns a shop next door. He said Ruby was playful and cute, and he's shocked at what happened.

"It was sad because you don't expect anything like this, especially a little girl, three year-old little girl."

Police said when they got there, the suspect had left after the stabbing. They searched for him for hours, but he turned himself in around 11 p.m.

Police said although the suspect and the victim's mother worked at the same place, they had minimal contact with each other.

A man named Francisco works with the suspect and Ruby's mom. He said the suspect was crazy, had a lot of problems and talked to himself.

Police said they don't have a motive. Utuy didn't even know the girl's parents and had only been working there for two weeks.

"Because if he's capable of doing this heinous act to the most innocent of our children, he's capable of doing anything," said Det. Moses Castillo.

"Who wants somebody that stabs a little girl working next to you or close by you?" Oscar Cerezo asked. "Makes you kind of concerned about who's coming in here. Definitely."

Utay is being held on $1 million bail.
