Long Beach Police Shoot Man Cutting His Own Throat

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com/AP) — Long Beach police say a man who was cutting his own throat was shot and wounded when he suddenly advanced toward officers with the knife raised.

A police department statement says officers were dispatched Thursday night when a resident reported an apparently intoxicated man was trying to enter the resident's front door in the Naples area.

Officers spotted the man walking down a sidewalk but he ignored their calls for him to stop, then stopped, turned around, drew a knife and began repeatedly cutting his throat while moving toward the officers.

The department says the officers were preparing to use less-lethal devices when the man raised the knife and quickly advanced. Police did not say whether more than one officer fired.

The man, identified as 25-year-old Richard Everhart of Lakewood, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. He was taken into custody for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
