CHINO HILLS (CBSLA.com)  —   Four high school students  were hurt -- at least one seriously -- and the driver of a vehicle critically injured following a fiery crash in Chino Hills Thursday afternoon.

Stu Mundel, overhear in Sky9, said the students were pedestrians. After allegedly striking several vehicles, the driver slammed into a light pole causing the car to burst into flames.

The crash occurred just before 2:30 p.m. outside Ayala High School on Peyton Way, at English.

KCAL9's Crystal Cruz said investigators were trying to determine if any of the students were also hit by the vehicle or injured by flying debris as a result of the driver hitting the light pole.

A male student suffered what was called "major injuries." He was airlifted by San Bernardino Sheriff's to a local hospital.

The driver, suffering from burn injuries, was transported in critical condition, authorities said.

Cruz spoke to witnesses who heard the crash and came running.

Breanna, a 15-year-old, was walking and texting and about to meet up with her mom when she heard the crash.

"I just saw the smoke and flames, it was scary," she said, "I was hoping no kids were hurt."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Officials told Cruz they were looking into the possibility that speed, alcohol or drugs or a combination.

"It could have also been a medical emergency," said San Bernardino County Sheriff Phill Dupper.

The 32-year-old driver has been identified as Travis Weible of Riverside. He's expected to spend the night in the hospital.
