Man Dies After Confrontation With Burbank Police

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Burbank police are investigating the death Tuesday of a man taken into custody after a call reporting someone making criminal threats, authorities said.

Officers responding to the 500 block of North Mariposa Street about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday encountered a man who confronted and fought with officers, Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco. During the struggle, another man came out of the home with a handgun, he said.

Officers used a Taser on the man they were trying to subdue, and the man with the gun returned into the home, Losacco said, leading to a barricade situation.

During the standoff, officers pulled the first man to safety but he later died at the scene, Losacco said.

After police talked to the man inside the home by phone, he surrendered and was taken into custody.

Detectives are conducting an investigation into the man's death, Losacco said, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will also investigate, as is policy with police in-custody deaths.

The Coroner's Office will determine the cause of the man's death.
