LA One Step Closer To Hosting 2024 Olympics After Rome Drops Bid

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) -- And then there were three.

The campaign to host the 2024 Olympics narrowed Wednesday after Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi has rejected the city's bid, effectively dooming the capital's candidacy.

That means that Los Angeles is now up against two other international cities vying to host the Games - Paris and Budapest.

After campaigning for office on a "No" vote, Raggi made it official on Wednesday.

Raggi said it would be "irresponsible" to pursue the bid any further, saying "in light of the data we have, these Olympics are not sustainable. They will bring only debt."

Similar concerns were addressed by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and other L.A. 2024 boosters in claims his office has made that the city is the most fiscally sustainable option because the needed sporting venues already exist.

The International Olympics Committee is scheduled to decide on a host city in September 2017.
