Camp Pendleton Marine, 19, Shot In Head Remains On Life Support

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  A 19-year-old Marine who was shot in the head Friday remains on life support.

CBS2's Adrianna Weingold spoke to the man's friends and family. Despite being shot in the head, they are hoping for a miracle for Lance Corporal Carlos Segovia-Lopez.

Claudia Perez can hardly go a moment without bursting into tears.

"He fought for the homeless community, he fought for our country and now he's fighting for his life, it's not fair," Perez said, trying to choke back tears.

Her dear friend and roommate, Segovia-Lopez,  is inside a California hospital, on life support.  He was shot in the head at Western and 31st Street and police still don't know why. He was driving home from his girlfriend's house.

"Expecting him to come home on Friday and he didn't show up and waking up to the phone call that he was shot in the head was unreal," said Perez.

Friends said he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, but comes home to South LA whenever he has a break. But even down time isn't wasted  -- he spends any and all of his free time volunteering with LA on Cloud 9, helping homeless families and animals in South LA.

"Being a Marine is a tough job, it's tiring and the time that he does get to rest he doesn't rest, he comes over here and helps volunteer for the homeless," said friend Andre Quezada.

His family says despite taking a bullet to his head, the young Marine still shows signs of brain activity. They're hoping and praying he wakes up.

Meantime, police are investigating who shot Segovia-Lopez but so far haven't released any information about a possible suspect.
