14-Year-Old Bulldog Missing 4 Days Rescued From Bottom Of Costa Mesa Trench

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — A bulldog was rescued by firefighters Saturday, after almost four days at the bottom of a trench.

Firefighters dug an access hole and pulled the dog Angus -- 14-years-old and missing his eyes -- to freedom just before 2 p.m. Saturday, in the backyard of a home on Elden Avenue.

The pet's owner, who lives at the home, called authorities for help Saturday.

Angus went missing four days ago. The dog was apparently silent at the bottom of the 10-foot deep trench.

The bulldog is in good condition at a nearby vet.

CBS2's Laurie Perez said the dog is dehydrated but is fortunate to have no broken bones.

It was sheer luck that Angus was even found. A neighbor helping Angus' owner, Robyn Hubbard, search for him saw the hole that Hubbard didn't even know was there.

"She started crawling around and all of a sudden she's like 'Did you know about this hole? And I said what hole? What are you talking about?," Hubbard said.

Firefighters took about an hour to rescue the dog.

Hubbard is even surprised Angus made it that far.

"He hasn't been in the backyard for a year," she said, "He can't even really walk from the bed to the den."

When she was out Wednesday Angus did blindly stumble from the bed to the backyard. He had had seven seizures earlier in the week -- Hubbard thinks he was going away to die. But now he's alive and rescued.

"Obviously," she said, "he's not on his last legs like I thought he was."
