Only On 2: 'Uninhabitable Conditions' Plague Residents At Westside Assisted Living Facility

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Dennis Sullivan is a former UCLA researcher and record producer who fell on hard times five years ago and became homeless.

Then in February, he was offered a bed at Brentwood Manor -- an assisted living facility on the west side.

Everything was fine for Sullivan until he encountered a flurry of uninvited guests -- roaches, bed bugs, and mice.

Attorney Denise McClanahan says she ran into the bugs as well when she visited the facility.

McClanahan says the building is fore sale, and everyone was ordered to move out by the end of last month.

She filed a lawsuit that alleges the building owner is now engaged in "a campaign of harassment and intimidation" , including "removing plaintiffs" belongings from their rooms and throwing them away, locking plaintiffs out of their rooms, and even threatening the plaintiffs that they would be forcefully removed by the police, and placed into either a homeless shelter or the custody of adult protective services.

The complaint also describes what it calls, "uninhabitable conditions", including "infestations of bed bugs, cockroaches, faulty electrical wiring, inadequate ventilation, inoperable smoke alarms, and cracks in the walls".

The attorney representing Brentwood Manor refused to allow our camera into the facility and declined to speak to us.

He did offer a written statement,  which says the facility has found homes for 120 people and is working to help the remaining 20 people who live here find homes.

He also added that Brentwood Manor "categorically denies" the allegations levied against it by the attorneys of the remaining residents.

Sullivan says he's trying to find a new place to live, but thanks to a judge's ruling, he and the other remaining residents who live there will have two more months before they have to leave.
