Family Returns Home After Fire But Others Still In Limbo

PHELAN (CBSLA.com) — Some people have been escorted back to their homes to look for medications and other important items, but most are not allowed to return yet.

Unfortunately, when some return, they'll come back to find just rubble.

CBSLA's Erica Nochlin talked with one fortunate family who found their way in through backroads and are now living in a trailer next to their house, which is still standing. They feel extremely lucky since the fire came right up to their home but skipped over it.

Their main house has no power or water from the well. They have a generator, a tank of water and they're ready to live here for weeks if they have to.

"All these people you care about, you live close to, all you work hard for, it could've been gone in an instant." Charles Gill said.

For others, strict evacuation orders have people eager to return home. Marja Anderson describes what it's like to get a taste of homelessness after sleeping in her car with her dog and staying in a motel with a friend.

She thought her house was gone for good but was happy to find it's still there to return to when authorities allow.
