LA 2024 Delegation Heads To Rio For Summer Olympics

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The crew that is trying to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Los Angeles departed for Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to attend the 2016 Summer Olympics, which are slated to begin on Friday.

The LA 2024 Committee is led by Mayor Eric Garcetti, who is joined by LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, CEO Gene Sykes, Vice Chair Janet Evans, and the rest of the 25-person staff.

The group plans to study and observe the activities in Brazil, while also meeting with global sports leaders in efforts to promote LA's bid for 2024.

"We are honored to be in Rio for the first ever Olympic Games to be staged in South America," Garcetti said.

"I am looking forward to meeting members of the Olympic family, athletes and as many `Cariocas' as possible, and sharing in this wonderful Olympic atmosphere," he added.

The Olympic Committee tasked with selecting the 2024 host city is expected to announce their choice by September 2017.

Paris, Rome and Budapest are all competing with LA for the bid.
