SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — The U.S. Navy is set to name a ship after former Navy diver and gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

According to the US Naval Institute news report, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus indicated he intends to name a Military Sealift Command fleet oiler the USNS Harvey Milk.

Milk served as a diving officer in San Diego during the Korean War on the submarine rescue ship Kittiwake.

After his military service, Milk was elected to the San Francisco board of supervisors and became the first openly gay California politician elected to office.
