Travel Ban Remains In Place Following Attempted Coup In Turkey

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The federal government has banned all fights between the United States and airports in Turkey after the country fought to overcome an attempted military coup.

Security is also extra tight for all international travelers.

At LAX, travelers are on high alert, cautious about going to countries like France, a recent target of terrorist attacks.

"It's very sad, it's frightening but at the same time, if we modify our way of life, I think those people will win," traveler Joel Bordes said.

Celine Cossou's two children and her husband are traveling to the south of France for a vacation, and she says it won't be easy having them so far away, especially in a place she says seems so prone to attacks.

"It's going to be hard, I'm going to try and keep in touch with them all of the time, have the news on all of the time, just to be sure everything is O.K," Cossou said.

The US State Department has several travel warnings out right now, including one to US citizens traveling to Turkey and throughout Europe -- warning of terrorist groups continuing to work in the area.

However, other travelers coming back to the US from Europe seem less concerned.

Sarah and Randy Lake just landed from Frankfurt, where they say in their 2 weeks abroad, they didn't notice any extra security and didn't have any problems.

"We take it in stride," Sarah Lake said.

"I wouldn't want to be in a place on Bastille Day with thousands of people especially given what happened, but in general, I think it's very safe to travel in Europe," she added.

The FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and the State Department are monitoring the situation in Turkey and will update current travel restrictions as they develop.
