Developer In Process Of Building Upscale Cemetery In Malibu

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) —  A coveted piece of Southern California coastal real estate could become one of the most expensive resting places in the world.

According to paper filed at Malibu City Hall, developer Richard Weintraub is in the process turning a 28-acre parcel of land, across from Pepperdine University, into a cemetery called Malibu Memory Park with 36,000 plots.

The proposed cemetery will overlook Pacific Coast Highway and Surfrider Beach where the "Gidget" TV show was shot.

CBS2/KCAL9's Dave Lopez tried to contact the developer Friday but was told he was in meetings and unavailable all day. His attorney plus Malibu's mayor and the city manager all declined to comment.

The cemetery will become a reality in two years, according to documents, unless the city's Planning Commission puts a stop to it.

According to reports, Weintraub had told friends Malibu Memory Park will be the priciest and most beautiful cemetery in the world.

Previously, Weintraub proposed building a hotel on the same site. But strong opposition from local residents forced him to give up on his plan.
