Police Officer's Wife Writes Heartfelt Post About Race, Gets Presidential Invitation

THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) — An Oxnard police officer's wife took to social media right after police killed black men in Louisiana and Minnesota, and the post has received an overwhelming response.

"Let me tell you a little about who lives behind this badge, because he would never share this about himself," wrote Brianna Battles about her husband Jared. "He was raised by his interracial grandparents and his single mother. He shakes his head with disgust and anger when a fellow officer, who was sworn to serve and protect, shames and brings dishonor to an entire profession."

Battles also wrote: "In a time of anger, division and hate, please remember this, his life matters because he leaves us everyday to protect yours."

The post was shared thousands of times and got the attention of a congressman.

The Battleses were invited to take part in President Barack Obama's town-hall meeting on race relations Thursday.

"I know she loves me, but it was great to have that show of support," said Officer Jared Battles.

Battles acknowledged the criticism of recent police shootings where black men were the targets and the damage that has been done to peace officers' images.

"Of course, it's tough, and we always have to combat that," he said. "The only way we combat that is by doing what we're doing every day, going out and doing the best job we can and doing right no matter what it means."
