Off-Duty LAPD Motorcycle Officer Hurt In Pomona Freeway Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An off-duty LAPD motorcycle officer on his way to work was injured Wednesday in a crash on the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Ontario.

According to police, the officer was riding to work in the carpool lane when the driver of a small SUV swerved and hit him about 11:15 a.m. at Mountain Avenue.

The motorcycle was thrown into the center divider.

The officer was taken by helicopter to Loma Linda University Medical Center, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im.

Fellow officers and family members arrived at the hospital throughout the day.

The officer's helmet helped protect his head when he was ejected, flew through the air, and hit the concrete.

He's expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the officer has been on the force 16 years, but has been a motorcycle only since last year.

LAPD policy allows officers to commute to work using their motorcycles.

The injured officer was headed to work for a 2 p.m. shift when the crash occurred.

The woman who was driving the SUV was also taken to a hospital to be examined.

Police have not announced whether she will be cited.
