Black Lives Matter Hold Vigil To Honor 2 Men Killed By Police This Week

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —    It was standing room only on Friday at a Black Lives Matter event held at the Underground Museum in Los Angeles.

KCAL9's Andrea Fujii said hundreds of people waited to get inside the event and some had to be turned away. They went to another Black Lives Matter event blocks away.

Kirk Brown waited on line. He said recent violence has opened his eyes.

"I operated within a bubble and seeing the things that I saw two days ago woke me up and I said okay, I need to start questioning thes things, I need to be more active within my community," Brown said.

The event was closed to the media.

Organizers said they hoped the event would spark discussion on how to stop the killing of black people by police officers.

And they said they would do so peacefully.

"All we've ever had were our chantings, we've had mega phones, but we've never called for violence," said Black Lives Co-founder Patrisse Cullors.

The organizers also asked people to attend Tuesday's LAPD Police Commission -- calling for change.

Dallas was also not far from many people's minds.

Anthony Lloyd wore his Cowboys t-shirt in memory of the officers gunned down Thursday night. But he also said he came to support Black Lives Matter.

"Police involved shootings with African Americans, you can't ignore it. I'm not saying all police are bad, I don't believe they are," said Lloyd.

People Fujii spoke to all agreed change was most definitely needed but without violence.

"As a society, as humanity we need to remember love is the foundation," said Leloni Smith.
