Fireworks Light Up Southern California Skies

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Skies lit up over Southern California Monday night, as fireworks shows exploded over Los Angeles and Orange counties in celebration of Independence Day.

AmericaFest drew about 30,000 people to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where the fireworks went on for almost half an hour.

Paul Magers, an anchor for CBS2/KCAL9, served as the emcee of the show, which required 20 pyrotechnicians, and more than two tons of fireworks.

JPL broadcast Juno's historic entry into Jupiter's orbit live on a huge screen inside the Rose Bowl Stadium.

Elsewhere, in Studio City, families filled the CBS Studio Center lot on Radford Avenue for a festival and fireworks display hosted by Josh Rubenstein, chief meteorologist for CBS2/KCAL9.

The event featured a pirate-theme with costumes, mermaids, exotic birds, and a magic show by Capt'n Jack Spareribs.

The Television Motion Picture Car Club also brought vintage cars to the event, putting vehicles that were featured in movies like "Back To The Future" and "The Blues Brothers" on display.

Earlier, thousands kicked off the holiday with one of more than a dozen parades in Los Angeles and Orange counties, including Huntington Beach's 112th annual Fourth of July parade. Mickey and Minnie Mouse served as the parade's grand marshals.
