Man Dies After Being Set On Fire Inside Parked Car In North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A man died Friday after being set on fire inside a car in the carport of a North Hollywood apartment building, authorities said.

Daniel Pineda, 28, of Van Nuys died about 1 a.m., coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said. He died from the injuries he suffered in the vehicle fire in the Valley Glen section of North Hollywood, Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado said.

The fire was reported at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in the detached carport of a two-story apartment building at 6606 Woodman Ave. located between Victory Boulevard and Vanowen Street, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The victim and another man had gotten into an argument that turned physical and the suspect doused the victim with gasoline and lit him on fire, Officer Tony Im said. Neighbors said they heard an explosion and saw the carport engulfed in flames shortly afterward.

The suspect, who was also injured in the incident, was in stable condition, Preciado said. He is in custody and subject to an investigation being conducted by the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division.

It's unclear why the men were arguing.

Thirty-seven firefighters responded and knocked down the blaze in 14 minutes, confining it to the carport and at least one vehicle and keeping the flames from reaching apartments, Humphrey said.
