Rams Rookies Help Build Playground In Inglewood

INGLEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles Rams players took a break from preseason workouts Wednesday to help build a playground in Inglewood.

KCAL9's Amy Johnson was there for all the blood and sweat (no tears).

The players, mostly rookies, were on hand with cheerleaders and Rams' staff to build the playground for Woodworth Elementary School.

Most of the players acknowledged construction was not their forte, but build they did.

Players arrived around 3 p.m.; they were coming from their training facility in Oxnard. A long trip but many said worth the trek.

They got some brief instructions and tackled the task at hand -- no fumbles.

"It's always fun to help out the community," says new quarterback Jared Goff. "We have a lot of guys doing a lot of things right now; we're getting some good work done here on the playground."

Nelson Spruce was also a novice with a hammer.

"No experience, but I'm local, so it's cool to be able to help out," the wide receiver said. "And it's a school in the community. It's cool to give back."

"This is our rookie year," said wide receiver Pharoh Cooper. "This is something we haven't been through. We're just out here trying to have a good time out here building this playground."

Tight end Tyler Higbee remembers playgrounds built when he was a kid.

"People were building playgrounds where I'm from," Higbee said, "and now I'm in the position to help and build a playground myself instead of just playing on one. It's a cool experience."

This event marks the Rams' eighth annual Community Improvement Project, but the first one here in Los Angeles.
