Prosecutors: Alleged Gun Buyer In San Bernardino Massacre Knew Aspiring Jihadists
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Federal prosecutors say the man suspected of buying high-powered rifles used in the San Bernardino terrorist attack had ties to a group of California jihadists.
The revelation in a court filing Tuesday says Enrique Marquez Jr. was associated with a group arrested as they tried to fly to Afghanistan to join al-Qaida.
Marquez has pleaded not guilty to conspiring with one of the San Bernardino shooters to provide material support to terrorists.
Prosecutors say Marquez plotted with Syed Rizwan Farook in 2011 and 2012 to massacre college students and gun down motorists on a gridlocked freeway.
The FBI previously said Marquez stopped plotting with Farook after four men in the area were arrested on terrorism charges in late 2012. The agency didn't say at the time if Marquez knew those men.
