Ceremony Held To Honor Cal State Long Beach Student Killed In Paris Attacks

NORCO (CBSLA.com) — A memorial ceremony was held Saturday to honor a 23-year-old California State University, Long Beach student who was killed in last year's terrorist attacks in Paris.

Members of the French boys selection soccer team, L.A. 59-62, presented Jose Hernandez and Beatriz Gonzalez with a trophy in memory of their daughter, Nohemi Gonzalez, during the Cerritos Memorial Challenge Cup.

Gonzalez died on Nov. 12, 2015, while she ate with friends at a popular bistro in Paris. She was one of 17 CSULB students attending Strate College of Design as part of a study abroad program.

In total, 129 people died in the coordinated attacks that took place at the cafe, a soccer stadium and a theater.

"I miss her, I miss her so much," said Beatriz. "

CBS2's Greg Mills attended the touching ceremony.

Mills spoke to Nohemi's mother, team members and the soccer team president, Herve Weuge.

The team is making its annual trip to Norco to play in the tournament.

Weuge left it up to the players decide how they would honor Nohemi.

"They give me many ideas," said Weuge.

After the match, they spelled out "Pray For Nohemi." The released doves. They had a flower arrangement saying "23."

There are 22 players on the team -- the added number was for Nohemi.

Jose is a soccer coach and the family housed players from the French team on several occasions.

The ceremony Saturday was appreciated for many reasons.

"Everything we do for her is in order also for us to heal, our personal healing," said Beatriz.

The match ended in a 1-1 tie.
