Woman Shot By Police In Critical Condition After Wild Santa Ana Crime Spree
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A Santa Ana woman was in critical condition Wednesday morning after being shot by police following a wild crime spree that included an attempted carjacking.
Alma Ramirez, 27, is expected to survive gunshot wounds inflicted by police Tuesday night, but faces several criminal charges.
Officers responded just before 8 p.m. Tuesday to a call about a woman with a large butcher knife attacking a man in an attempted carjacking in the 3300 block of West Fifth Street, Santa Ana police spokesman Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
She allegedly stabbed the vehicle owner in the process, then got into a confrontation with two men who tried to intervene, but no one was injured in that conflict, Bertagna said.
"Then she allegedly tried to break into a business. When that didn't work, she got a bicycle -- don't know if the bike was stolen -- and tried to pedal away," Bertagna said. "She then headed eastbound on Fifth Street and outside a park, she approached officers (while) carrying a knife. The officers ordered her to drop the knife but she refused. That's when the officer-involved shooting took place."
The initial victim who Ramirez allegedly tried to carjack was treated at the scene, but not taken to a hospital for treatment.
"I don't know if she was on drugs, or mentally ill or just a criminal, but that will all be sorted out in the investigation," Bertagna said.
