Woman Accused In Carjacking Attempt Shot By Police In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a woman accused in an attempted carjacking at a car wash in Santa Ana has been shot by police.

The officer-involved shooting unfolded just before 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of West 5th Street in Santa Ana, though there were multiple crime scenes.

Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department said the suspect stabbed the owner of the vehicle during an attempted carjacking at the corner of W. 5th and New Hope streets.

She then, according to police, ran off with the man's keys and attempted to break into a business.

Police said it was then two good Samaritans intervened and attempted to stop her. Both sustained minor injuries.

Bertagna said the suspect at that point rode away on a bicycle, traveling eastbound on 5th Street toward a park.

Police responded to the scene and located the suspect who they allege was waving a knife at officers and walked toward a car full of people.

Police ordered her to drop the knife. When she failed to comply, they say an officer-involved shooting transpired.

The woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The three other individuals sustained minor injuries.

No further details were immediately available.
