2 Officers Injured, 1 Suspect Dead In Boyle Heights Shootout

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com/AP) — A Los Angeles police officer is recovering Sunday from a gunshot wound to the shoulder he suffered in an officer-involved-shooting in Boyle Heights that left a second officer injured and a suspected gang member dead.

The shooting occurred at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of Lee Street, near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets.

Two gang officers were trying to stop a fleeing man who then produced a gun. A shootout ensued.

The alleged gang member was killed. He was identified Sunday as Robert Mark Diaz, 28. He was homeless, according to the coroner's office.

A Hollenbeck Division gang officer was shot and rushed to County-USC Medical Center. A second officer suffered a back strain.

The officer who survived the gunshot wound was in high spirits Saturday morning and was being visited by his wife and baby, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said.

"He's thrilled to be alive," Beck said. "He was in great spirits."

The officers were wearing body cameras, and the footage will be reviewed.

The shooting is being investigated by the LAPD's Use of Force Division, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Justice System Investigation Division Shooting Team and the Los Angeles Police Commission's Inspector General's Office.
