Muslim Student Wrongly Identified In Yearbook As 'Isis' Says She's 'Sad,' 'Embarrassed'

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — School administrators met with the parents of a 17-year-old Muslim student Monday who was wrongly identified in her yearbook photo, which has sparked widespread outrage online.

The Los Osos High School student, whose actual name is Bayan Zehlif, was pictured wearing a hijab in the photo under the name "Isis Phillips."

"I'm very sad because of what happened," Zehlif said Monday. "I'm very embarrassed."

On Sunday, the school's principal, Susan Petrocelli, posted an apology on Twitter explaining a student named Isis Phillips used to attend the high school. That person is still enrolled in the school district.

Zehlif apparently responded to the incident on Facebook, stating: "I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed. The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let's be real."

The yearbook committee also acknowledged the error, and posted a statement on Twitter that reads: "We are extremely sorry for what occurred in the Yearbook. It is our duty to represent the students of Los Osos High School and by mis-tagging and giving the incorrect name, we failed to do so. We should have checked each name carefully in the book and we had no intention to create this misunderstanding. It is our fault and this is absolutely inexcusable on our part. We are currently working in coordination with the school and district office to remedy this situation."

The Greater Los Angeles office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for a thorough investigation of the incident and for appropriate punishments to be distributed if necessary.

Superintendent Matt Holton said the incident is being thoroughly investigated.

"A student should be able to open a yearbook ... and have that be an enjoyable process," he said.

The student's father says he won't send his daughter back to school until he gets more answers.
