Dramatic Details Emerge About How Doctor Reacted To Call For Help From Prince's Staff

CHICAGO (CBSLA.com/AP) — Dramatic details have emerged about how a California doctor reacted to a desperate call for help from Prince's staff a day before the musician was found dead.

Prince's representatives contacted Dr. Howard Kornfeld of California on April 20, with the musician's knowledge, seeking help for Prince's addiction to painkillers, Kornfeld's attorney, William Mauzy, said Wednesday.

"He set into motion a plan to deal with what he felt was a life-saving mission," Mauzy said.

Kornfeld wasn't able to travel immediately to Minnesota, so he arranged for his son Andrew to travel instead via an overnight flight, Mauzy said.

Andrew was carrying a small amount of the prescription drug buprenorphine. Mauzy said Andrew planned to give that drug to a Minnesota doctor who was scheduled to see Prince. Andrew — described as a pre-med student — was among the first to discover Prince unresponsive on April 21.

"He arrives to see him dead in an elevator, unconscious in an elevator," Mauzy said.

On Tuesday, the Carver County Sheriff's office released a log of dozens of emergency calls made from Prince's Paisley Park home.

In June of 2011, 911 got a call from a person "concerned about Prince's cocaine habits."

The caller said: "He advised her last year in Germany that he cannot control his habit & she was advised to report it … "

Police said they were unable to investigate that report because the information was a year old. The caller did not say Prince was in any immediate danger.
