Driver Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI After Deadly Rollover Crash Outside La Serna High

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a man has been arrested in connection with a deadly crash that killed a 14-year-old girl in Whittier.

The sport utility vehicle flipped over Mar Vista Street and Villaverde Drive around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday and injured five others, including the driver, identified by police as Daniel Vasquez, 19, of Whittier.

Hours later, those who heard about the accident visited the crash scene to pray for the girl who died though they didn't know her.

"She's a baby," said Lorraine Hash, a local mother. "She's somebody's daughter. It's sad."

Jay Lee was playing golf across the street when he says he heard a vehicle speeding, then a crash.

He ran to the scene.

"The engine like coming up, I mean, they were going probably I would say at least 70 miles an hour," Lee said.

Whittier police said the five passengers were students at La Serna High School including the girl who died after being ejected from her seat.

Of the injured, two were transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Lee said the driver didn't look much other than the other kids in the car. He says he also saw beer cans.

"I saw a couple of them out there," he said. "Most of them probably flown out of the car."

Loring Davies, the assistant superintendent of educational services for the Whittier Union High School District, said the district would work with the school to ensure that counselors are available to all students and staff through the week.

Police said Vasquez was transported to jail after being released from the hospital. He has since been booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, authorities said.
