Toddler On The Mend After Being Bitten By Rattlesnake In Chino Hills

CHINO HILLS (CBSLA.com) — A toddler is on the mend almost a week after being bitten by a snake.

Olivia Evans, 2, was out on a nature walk last Tuesday when she was bitten by a rattlesnake.

Her parents say she was with her daycare on a sidewalk when the snake bit her.

"We saw the obvious marks on her leg so we knew she had been bit by a snake and we were told by a passerby that they felt it was a rattlesnake," Capt. Don Ross of the Chino Valley Fire Department said.

Ross and his team swooped in to save Olivia, who was airlifted her to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

"She wasn't crying very much," he said. "She was being very quiet and it was just a very serious situation."

"And we wanted to get her to the most appropriate hospital, get her to Loma Linda and get the anti-venom on-board," he said.

Olivia has been treated with 42 vials of anti-venom, and while she is making significant progress, she's still resting in bed.

Her parents say she's in great spirits and is looking forward to going home soon.

Ross says she's fortunate to have made such an incredible recovery.

"It's a very scary injury that … it can cause a lot of damage to someone," he said. "It's a potential deadly injury."

The entire ordeal has been both emotionally and financially draining for the Evans family who has set-up a GoFundMe account to try and offset some of the costs.

The Evans family says any donations they receive that are above and beyond their needs will be donated to other snakebite victims in Southern California.
