Powerful Winds Topple Trees, Cause Power Outages In Southern California

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Very powerful and potentially damaging winds continued to blow through the Southland Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, a high wind warning will remain in effect until noon on Saturday.

The strongest winds were present in the Antelope Valley, with damaging gusts reaching up to 70 miles per hour.

Forecasters urged drivers to use extra precaution when driving in order to be prepared for sudden gusty cross winds that could knock down trees and power lines.

CBS2's Kara Finnstrom came across a huge tree that fell through a wall in Northridge.

A second downed tree hindered the morning commute for students traveling near California State University, Northridge.

Major roadways that could be affected by powerful winds include the 5 Freeway and Highways 2, 14 and 39.

As of 11:30 a.m., about 23,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers were experiencing power service interruptions.

Heavy winds have caused 290 outages in Exposition Park, East Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, Northridge, Canoga Park, North Hollywood, Sylmar, Panorama City and Faircrest Heights.

It remains unclear when power will be restored in these areas.
