LAPD Officers, Civilians Injured In South LA Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Two Los Angeles police officers and two passengers in another vehicle were injured when the civilian car ran a stop sign and slammed into a police cruiser on routine patrol, a sergeant said Thursday.

The collision took place about 8:40 p.m. at Halldale and Gage avenues in South Los Angeles, LAPD spokesman Ricardo Hernandez said.

According to LAPD Sgt. Norma Vargas, the Mercedes Benz involved in the crash was driving south on Halldale Avenue, then ran a stop sign at the intersection with Gage Avenue, where the Mercedes slammed into the police cruiser that was on routine patrol along Gage.

Two officers and two people in the Mercedes were injured. One of the people in the Mercedes broke an arm, Hernandez said.

All four were taken to a hospital for treatment, then released.

Officers initially responded to the scene and then handed the investigation over to the Multi-Discipline Collision Investigation Team, which operates citywide under the LAPD's Traffic Coordination Section, said Vargas.

MTIC provides a high-tech investigation of crashes, according to Vargas and Hernandez.

"They are called out when city employees are involved and there are possible city liability issues raised by the accident," Hernandez said.
