Residents Of Redondo Beach Senior Facility Stuck Without Running Water

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mike Rivera is taking advantage of the running water in his Redondo Beach apartment while he can.

"They put out a letter saying there would be no water from 8am-5pm each day including Saturday's," Rivera said.

They are trying to contain the insulation and dust due to broken pipes with plastic all over the walls, floors, and ceilings, while the property manager at Heritage Point Senior Apartments attempts to make replacements.

"They're taking the road that they've got to expose every bit of piping and replace every bit of piping in the building," Rivera added.

Residents say the path to progress is plagued.

"We have so many tenants in their 80's and 90's that cannot get around or breathe. It's really sad," resident Sharon Ritums said.

The problem started more than a year ago, when busted pipes led to leaks and even mold.

Redondo Beach City Councilman Steve Sammarco represents this distrcit and is trying to figure out what is going on.

He says the buildings are supposed to be maintained by PK Management, based out of South Carolina.

We were unable to reach them for a comment.

"I'd love to tell you what their plan is, but since they don't have the proper permits from the city, I dont think that the plan has been unveiled at this point," Councilman Sammarco said.

Residents say the demolition started weeks ago in the hallways and select apartments in building C. Residents were also told there will be no water during the day, and only one hospitality bathroom for more than 30 units.

"I fill up my tub and I use it in case I have to use the facilities," Ritums said.

According to the notices posted on the door, the water was supposed to be shut off last Monday -- but that didn't happen.

For those who live there, that has just added to the confusion because they aren't sure which day they'll wake up and not have water at all.

"We don't know how many weeks it's going to take. We have no idea what the plan is," Rivera added.

While his city councilman tries to figure that out -- Rivera says he will keep getting up early, using the water when he can, and stay away as much as possible.
