Pressed Juicery Gets Warning From FDA

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — Pressed Juicery is feeling the squeeze from the FDA.

A warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration says the company is not complying with certain rules. The letter reads in part: "Your juice products ... have been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions, whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health."

The advisory is a surprise to customers.

"I've had an assortment from juices from Pressed Juicery, and I've never gotten sick," one customer said.

The company issued a forceful response, saying in part: "The FDA has no health or safety issues with our products when refrigerated as directed on our product labels. Their concern is specifically related to the potential risks when our products are subject to 'severe temperature abuse.' "

The FDA warns certain organisms can form in the products if they are not stored properly.

Manuel Momjian, a physician, says symptoms from spoiled juices can vary.

"Any kind of gastrointestinal symptoms. Some nausea, abdominal pains, fatigue," Momjian said.

Pressed Juicery has 15 days to respond to the FDA.
