'Lunada Bay Boys' Slapped With Suit That Aims To Prevent Group From Gathering At Coveted Spot

PALOS VERDES ESTATES (CBSLA.com) — Many want to visit Lunada Bay in Palos Verdes Estates but some say it's not possible because of an alleged surfing gang.

The "Lunada Bay Boys" have been accused of intimidating and threatening people who want to surf at the popular spot.

"You got the Lunada Bay Boys who have staked their claim for over four decades," said Cory Spencer, a surfer.

Last year, a newspaper reporter with the Guardian took a hidden camera when he tried to surf at the spot and recorded what the group said to him.

Spencer is both an avid surfer and an El Segundo police officer and is leading a lawsuit against the group, asking a judge to stop them from gathering at the Bay.

He alleges he was verbally and physically attacked by the group.

But what makes Lunada Bay so special?

The legendary surf spot at the base of cliffs on the Palos Verdes Peninsula has waves untouched by any coastline, creating 15- to 20-foot waves coveted by expert surfers.

Spencer and the others are also suing the city of Palos Verdes Estates alleging the police department knows of the issue but hasn't done anything about it.

"I know they're small, but I know that the department I work for, we wouldn't tolerate it," said Spencer.

The city sent CBS2 a statement saying in part:

"Our Police Department takes seriously its public safety mission and has and will continue to monitor and enforce the laws in Lunada Bay... We understand that a class action lawsuit was filed. The City
has not had a chance to evaluate the allegations and will respond accordingly."

"Access has been denied for four decades," said Spencer. "Justice is way overdue."
