LA City Council To Declare Dr. Lucy Jones Day

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles City Council will declare Wednesday in honor of seismologist Lucy Jones.

At 10 a.m., Councilman Mitch Englander will lead a presentation in the council chamber at City Hall.

Jones, 61, is retiring from the U.S. Geological Survey after a 33 year-tenure.

After her retirement, Jones will remain with Caltech to raise money to build a center focused on helping policymakers make better use of scientific research. She also plans to place more attention on issues such as climate change.

Jones is best known for her work notifying the public about earthquakes.

In recent years, she has used Twitter to provide real-time information and tips following temblors.
