Man Arrested After Allegedly Ramming Truck Into Gates At San Bernardino Police Station

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) A 35-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after ramming the security gates of the San Bernardino Police Department headquarters with his pickup, police said.

Police say a San Bernardino Police Department Lieutenant Rich Lawhead was on his way home from the precinct at 7th Street and D Street this afternoon when he saw something out-of-the-ordinary -- a man ramming the armored gates of the police station with his pickup.

"He's been on the force for over 20 years, so I'm sure he's seen a lot of crazy, but today was a little bit unexpected," SBPD spokeswoman Eileen Hards said.

The pickup driver fled, but Lawhead followed the truck for several blocks and got the driver to pull over at 9th Street and Arrowhead Ave.

The driver, Luis Manuel Iniquez, was arrested at the scene. He passed a sobriety test was not believed to be armed. He does not have a criminal record, police said..

The man's intentions were unknown and remained a mystery on Wednesday night. Police are reviewing security video to get a better idea of why the driver felt compelled to ram the gate.

"Officers in the building were very surprised that it happened, and we don't know why or what his intentions were," Hards said.

Police say the only thing Iniquez told them was, "Talk to my lawyer."

The gate sustained minor damage and was quickly repaired.
