Wetter-Than-Normal Conditions Possible Over Next 3 Months Due To El Niño

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Wetter-than-normal conditions are possible over the next three months, it was reported Thursday.

The National Weather Service provided an update in Long Beach on El Niño using data and technology from National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

They say the weather system hasn't gone anywhere, noting that not all El Niño systems behave the same way.

"El Nino is here. It is still considered strong," said a representative during the briefing.

"There is an area across the central Pacific that's called the Niño 3.4 that is about 2.3 degrees Celsius above normal which match pretty closely to what that area of the ocean was in 1997, 1998," he said, adding: "So it is one of the strongest El Niño's on record going back to 1950."

He said the climate prediction center was showing the possibility of wetter-than-normal conditions in March, April, and May.

"We still have the fourth quarter of the game. There is still some time that we could make up quite a bit of the deficit," he said.
