2 Killed -- Including Pregnant Woman -- After Car Slams Into Home In Boyle Heights After Driver Was Shot

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Two people  -- including a pregnant woman -- were killed Sunday when a vehicle barreled into a one-story home in Boyle Heights after the driver had been shot.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in the 1500 block of Pleasant Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Three people were inside of the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Paramedics transported a man to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Firefighters said a second man was transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. An update on his condition was not immediately available.

The crash was so intense, first responders told KCAL9's Adrianna Weingold that the home was lifted off its foundation.

The car landed upside down inside the house.

Authorities pronounced the third victim, who remained trapped within the wreckage of the vehicle located underneath a collapsed porch, dead at the scene. Their identity is also being withheld pending family notification.

Witnesses told her the victim was 3-4 months pregnant.

The crash was so loud, residents told Weingold they thought it was something to do with the Sixth Street Bridge demolition.

Police told her a black SUV pulled up next to the white sedan and fired one shot striking the driver. The driver of the white car was able to keep driving but the driver ended up slamming into the house. The driver died from his gunshot wound.

The Department of Building & Safety will assess the home for tenability due to the extent of damage.

On Sunday evening, KCAL9's Stacey Butler said the home was so damaged it was red-tagged.

Residents told her it was a miracle the homeowner -- a retired nurse who has lived in the residence for 50 years -- was not hurt.

"I heard somebody screaming help," said Isaac Maldonado.

The woman and her son were in the back of the home at the time of the crash and not hurt.

Police were trying to determine if the incident was gang-related.
