Deputy Seriously Injured While Grappling With Knife-Wielding Suspect Barricaded Inside Home

CANYON COUNTRY (CBSLA.com)  —  Officials said a sheriff's deputy was seriously injured Thursday while grappling with a knife-wielding suspect barricaded inside a Canyon Country home.

The suspect reportedly barricaded himself inside a bedroom along with his two young children, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies were called Thursday after a woman alleged she was assaulted by her husband inside their home in the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway.

The woman said her husband was emotionally disturbed and was holed up in the bedroom with the couple's children, ages 3 and 5.

Deputies got the man to crack open the door, and during their conversation, the suspect said "he wanted to die tonight," according to the Sheriff's Department.

The man dropped the knife but would not unblock the door. A deputy broke the bedroom window from the outside to distract the man, then deputies inside the home pushed open the door and rushed in.

"A violent struggle ensued wherein a deputy assigned to the Santa Clarita station was assaulted by the man and aggressively thrust into the wall, causing significant head trauma and injuries to his upper torso," according to a sheriff's statement. "Additional deputies at the scene were subsequently able to restrain the man after a brief struggle and take him into custody. The children were rescued and were not injured."

The injured deputy was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. His name was withheld.

The suspect was also taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the struggle with the deputies. He was eventually booked on suspicion of domestic violence-related offenses, assaulting a peace officer, cruelty to children and dissuading a victim, and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to the Sheriff's Department.
