Vehicle Crashes Into Fire Hydrant, Electrical Pole In Commerce

COMMERCE (CBSLA.com) — A vehicle struck a fire hydrant and power pole in the city of Commerce, trapping a motorist inside the car for over an hour, authorities said Tuesday.

The crash unfolded shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the 7600 block of Telegraph Road at Slauson Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

Upon their arrival, authorities located the fire hydrant spewing water into the air.

A preliminary investigation revealed a truck cut off the driver of the vehicle, which then swerved in the roadway and struck the fire hydrant. The driver then struck an electrical pole, which fell in the area.

Officers said the driver was rescued from the vehicle as there were downed live wires in the roadway. Paramedics transported the driver to a hospital for evaluation.

Water has been shut off in the area.

Traffic has been blocked in both directions between Slauson and Greenwood until further notice, officers said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
