Many 'Star Wars' Fans Complain Of Absence Of Rey On Store Shelves

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Many "Star Wars" fans are complaining about the absence of a main character on store shelves.

Specifically, they are using social media to draw attention to the fact that Rey, a female character, is not included among the men when it comes to figurines.

A Target-exclusive, a six-piece "Star Wars" set with many of the main characters, doesn't include females like Rey.

"I think that's kind of messed up because she had a huge part in this movie," said Archie Gonzales, a "Star Wars" fan.

Other outraged customers took to Twitter to let the companies know of their frustration using the hashtag #WheresRey.

One tweet says, "I am painfully disappointed in @DisneyStudios @Target @Hasbro - the movie is great & now you've spoiled it for me. #girlsmatter."

Another says, "Including your movie's MAIN CHARACTER does seem like a fairly basic thing to get right #WheresRey."

"It is a main character. Just like back when 'Star Wars' first came out, they always included Princess Leia with everything," Steffanie Mellon, a mother, said.

"With kids, it kind of depicts like only men can be heroes and like only men are the main characters," Gonzales added.

In a statement, Target said it listens to feedback from customers, and has already shared this particular concern with the appropriate people.

The statement also added:

"Although not part of this specific 6-pack, Rey is featured across a broad assortment of products and categories. Rey is well-represented in our current assortment and selling exceptionally well. In most stores, product featuring Rey is selling as quickly as we can get it on to shelves."

Rey action figures are being sold separately online. At a Burbank Target, the set in question wasn't on the shelf.
