Caught On Video: Gunman Who Killed 1, Wounded 3 Others In Shooting At Downtown Hotel

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police released surveillance images Wednesday of a gunman who killed a 22-year-old man and wounded three others outside The Standard hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting happened about 2:20 a.m. Sunday at the boutique hotel, 550 S. Flower St., Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Rosario Herrera said.

Thomas Johnson, whose city of residence was not available, died at a hospital. Three other victims were hospitalized in stable condition.

No arrests have been reported.

Before the shooting, two groups of males began arguing and then fighting in front of the hotel, police said.

"After the fight ended, a suspect pulled out a hand gun and began shooting at the victims," according to an LAPD statement.

Two male victims were shot in front of the hotel and were later taken to hospitals for treatment, police said.

"Mr. Johnson ran to the rear of the hotel through the lobby to avoid getting shot," according to the LAPD. "Simultaneously, the suspect ran around the hotel toward the rear and confronted Mr. Johnson."

The suspect fired several shots, striking Johnson and another victim who fired back with his own gun, police sad.

The suspect is described as black, 5 feet 10 with black hair worn in corn rows, brown eyes and a black mustache. He wore a long black trench coat, black pants and black shoes.

The 12-story, 207-room hotel, which has been among the cornerstones of a tourist and night life resurgence in downtown Los Angeles, features a rooftop pool and German beer garden.

The hotel is at the site of the former Superior Oil headquarters building and is known for attracting a young -- and often "hipster" -- crowd to take in the city views and even engage in some spirited competition at a ping-pong lounge.

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call the investigating detectives at (213) 996-1891.
