Indio Police Officer Fatally Shoots Suspect In Exchange Of Gunfire Over Stolen Golf Cart

INDIO (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities said an Indio police officer fatally shot a suspect Saturday in an exchange of gunfire  over a golf cart that was allegedly stolen.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 48300 block of Madison Street, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Armando Munoz.

Officers were responding to a report of a stolen golf cart -- nearby -- in the 49400 block of Tidewater Drive, Munoz said.

An officer located the suspect in the 80900 block of Avery Way.

Authorities said the officer attempted to apprehend the suspect but an exchange of gunfire took place.

The suspect died at the scene, Munoz  said.

The officer was not injured. As is standard operating procedure, the officer was placed on paid administrative leave while the sheriff's department investigates the incident.
