Security Expert Gives Tips For Surviving Workplace Shootings In Wake Of San Bernardino Tragedy

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Wednesday's tragic shooting in San Bernardino provided a fresh reminder of what can happen if a co-worker becomes violent. Security experts gave a number a tips for such a situation.

As security expert Jeff Zisner explains, keeping calm during an active-shooter situation could be the difference between life and death.

Zisner, who owns Aegis Security and Investigations, provides security guards for private and public entities, and says he was swamped with calls as a result of Wednesday's shooting, in which at least 14 victims were killed, and 17 were wounded.

"If these guys are on the loose, we don't know what's going to happen, so we've been scrambling armed guards all throughout the day," Zisner said.

Additionally, Zisner consults businesses on how to deal with a shooting at the workplace. His advise is simple; run, hide, or fight.

"Worst case scenario, if you have nothing else to be able to do, you need to fight, and you need to fight with aggression" Zisner explained. "You have to improvise weapons."

Zisner explains that, if you are unable to get away or hide, a wise choice would be to lock the door, barricade yourself, and turn off your phone after calling police.

While the motive behind Wednesday's shooting remained under investigation, Zisner says mass shootings are most deadly when there is no specific target.

"If they're just unhappy with an organization, or an entity, and its indiscriminate, that's when you have to be the most effective in being able to get out and get away and protect yourself," Zisner stated.

When asked what precautions he takes whenever walking into a room, Zisner responded that he first looks for anything suspicious, and then identifies the best escape route. He also sits with his back to a wall, so that there's nothing he can't see.
