Crops Threatened By Frost In Parts Of Riverside County

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Forecasters say unprotected crops could be damaged by near freezing temperatures and frost expected early in the morning and late at night Monday in parts of Riverside County.

A National Weather Service frost advisory for the valleys around Riverside and the Coachella Valley is set to remain in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Low temperatures in the low to mid-30s are in the forecast early Monday morning and overnight in locales including Coachella, Mecca, Indio and Thermal. Temperatures could drop below freezing in the coldest spots.

At about 3:45 a.m., the weather service reported temperatures of 34 degrees in Temecula, 37 degrees in Thermal, 41 degrees in Riverside and 44 degrees in Palm Springs.

The low temperatures combined with clear skies and light winds are expected to produce areas of frost in wind-sheltered portions of the lower Coachella Valley, the valleys and much of the Inland Empire, according to the weather service.

Forecasters warned the cold could harm unprotected crops, sensitive outdoor plants and pets.
