LAPD Says Several Men Just Released From Jail Robbed Gas Station

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) – Los Angeles police believe a group of men robbed a gas station right after they were released from jail.

Police released a security video showing two of the men wearing white bracelets, which they say are proof the men likely just walked out of the Men's Central Jail in Downtown L.A.

Investigators said the men robbed a Chevron gas station a few blocks away from the jail.

The owner told CBS2/KCAL9's Rachel Kim that when the clerk was distracted, one of the suspects opened the transaction drawer, put his arm through it and started reaching around.

Police said they stole the lifeline for the gas station - keys to the pumps, the register in the mini mart and anything someone might need.

Gas station co-owner Luis Hernandez said: "In the morning when we changed shifts, we needed the keys to open up some doors and they couldn't find them."

Detectives believe the suspects may be repeat offenders released under Prop. 47.  Under this law, certain non-violent felonies can be reduced to misdemeanors, resulting in early releases from jail.

"Serving time, getting probation, and going out and doing the crimes again. It is extremely time-consuming for us," said Det. Steve Franssen of the LAPD.

"I hope someone identifies them so they can catch them. They cost me a lot of money," Hernandez said.
