Orphaned Bear Cub Goes From Melancholy To Merry In New Sanctuary

Orphan cub Murphy has a new place to play

Orphaned by poachers, rescued from traffickers - poor Murphy arrived whimpering, sad and lost at our Vietnam sanctuary. It will take many months more to fully rehabilitate this beautiful sun bear cub - but exploring his new play space gave him his best day yet. It's wonderful to see you so happy Murphy. Huge thanks to Bear Manager Kelly for taking such good care of him and for providing us with this incredible footage. Watch out for his little "thank you" smile at the end.

(CBSLA.com) — A sun bear cub orphaned by poachers is getting a new lease on life at a sanctuary in Vietnam.

Video of "Murphy" the sun bear is sweeping Facebook, where it's been viewed more than 40,000 times since it was posted Sunday.

The cub may have arrived to the Animals Asia facility whimpering and distraught but he's now frolicking in his new play space and tinkering with his toys.

One of his caretakers says he's still too young to be placed with older bears, but in due time he'll join the sun bear community that call the sanctuary home.

Southern California is home to several bear sanctuaries of our own, including Lions, Tigers and Bears in Alpine and the Wildlife Waystation in Sylmar.
