Labor Unions Seek Aid From Lawmakers To Repair Crumbling Roadways

CULVER CITY (CBSLA.com) — Drivers remained outraged Tuesday over the condition of crumbling roadways, which labor unions say are in desperate need of attention here in Southern California.

According to the California Alliance For Jobs Coalition, decades of neglect has left the state's roadways deteriorating from potholes and cracked streets.

On Monday, labor unions posted video titled "Bad Roads Tour 2015," which revealed a long list of streets that need repairs in areas such as Lomita and Placentia.

The clip also highlighted other dangerous roadway conditions such as hazardous bridges and storm water culverts that need replacing.

Steel plates shown in streets were described as a sign of improvement, although the group reported local city officials have not done much to address the ongoing issue.

The video, which is part of the "Fix Our Roads" campaign, aims to seek the attention of lawmakers in Northern California to share the cost of construction.

Lawmakers, however, have been unable to agree on how to share the burden of funding with local city governments.

CBS2's Kara Finnstrom reported labor unions have suggested higher vehicle registration fees as a way to help pay for necessary repairs.

Without more funding, streets will remain in "ailed condition" by 2024, according to the labor unions.
